OTTAWA, July 12, 2022 – The CIO Strategy Council is pleased to announce the publication of a new National Standard of Canada that specifies minimum requirements for the responsible governance of responsible data trust, collaboratives, and cooperatives.
The National Standard of Canada, CAN/CIOSC 100-7:2022, Data Governance – Part 7: Operating model for responsible data stewardship, covers the fundamental characteristics and requirements regarding data stewardship and its elements such as, safe collaboration, sharing, and data protection. CAN/CIOSC 100-7 is a part of a series of national standards concerning data governance and applies to the fiduciary stewardship, management, and responsibility in the sharing, storage, and exchange of data.
It was prepared by the CIO Strategy Council technical committee on data governance, comprised of over 200 thought leaders, policy makers, regulators, industry leaders, academics, and civil society representatives from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
“There are compelling reasons for organizations to share data, from improving operational efficiencies and reducing business costs to generating new insights and making better business decisions. This National Standard of Canada provides essential requirements for organizations that steward data on behalf of others. It ensures appropriate safeguards in how organizations collect, uses and shares data with another organization or persons.”
– Keith Jansa, Executive Director, CIO Strategy Council
“The use, sharing, and re-use of data can generate significant public benefits, but only if there is responsible data stewardship in place. Health Data Research Network Canada is pleased to support the work of the CIO Strategy Council in publishing CAN/CIOSC 100-7, a standard which outlines the minimum set of requirements that will help ensure responsible and trustworthy stewardship of data trusts, data repositories, and other data collaborations.”
– Alison Paprica, Health Data Research Network Canada, University of Toronto
“In order to share information, the data provider must be able to trust the means by which it is sharing data and the parties it is sharing data with. Innovate Cities is building CityShield, a data trust that is founded upon protecting the privacy of individuals through the use of technology designed for that purpose and by abiding by the highest governance standards. Standards like CAN/CIOSC 100-7 are an important element of our governance standard and will help build the confidence required for others to take part in responsible and trusted data stewardship. Preserving privacy while sharing information with others must be the future of the digital world.”
– Hugh O’Reilly, Executive Director, Innovate Cities
