New Edition of Data Residency and Sovereignty Standard in Progress to Meet Evolving Needs (CAN/DGSI 100-8)

OTTAWA, September 5, 2024 – The Digital Governance Standards Institute (DGSI) is pleased to announce the initiation of a new edition of CAN/DGSI 100-8:2023 Data Governance – Part 8: Framework for Geo-Residency and Sovereignty. This new edition of the standard will introduce critical enhancements designed to help organizations better protect data assets from jurisdictional risks while navigating the global technology ecosystem.

The key changes in the new edition will include:

  • An enhanced scope to include data
  • Clarification of legal precedence.
  • Formal risk assessment documentation.
  • Formalized risk acceptance process.

The new edition will enhance the existing framework with critical updates, enabling organizations to better protect data assets and address jurisdictional risks. As data mobility across borders increases and international data protection laws grow more complex, this standard provides a comprehensive, adaptable approach to safeguarding sensitive information in a global context.

The standard is jurisdictional and technology-agnostic, offering adaptable guidance for specific business needs across all sectors. This standard is applicable across all sectors, including public and private companies, government entities, and not-for-profit organizations, with key considerations such as the identification and categorization of data assets, development of appropriate threat models, and adherence to data sovereignty due diligence.
