The Digital Governance Standards Institute (DGSI) is inviting public feedback as part of the 90-day systematic maintenance review of CAN/DGSI 100-1, Data governance – Part 1: Data centric security, a National Standard of Canada.
This standard specifies minimum requirements for products and services providing data protection of digital assets at rest, in motion, and in use across platforms (e.g., endpoints, mobile, cloud). It facilitates secure sharing and collaboration across IT systems both within and between organizations.
What the Standard Covers
CAN/DGSI 100-1 promotes a data-centric security model that ensures data itself remains protected wherever it resides.
The standard provides guidance on:
- Data protection fundamentals and encryption requirements
- Access controls and the “need-to-know” model
- Secure data sharing and interoperability across organizations
- Cryptographic key ownership and management
- Security event logging, monitoring, and audit requirements
- Governance and administrative safeguards
Why This Matters
As organizations face growing risks from cyber threats, unauthorized access, and inadvertent data misuse, data-centric security offers a stronger, more resilient approach than traditional perimeter-based models. By focusing protections directly on the data, this standard helps organizations:
- Reduce risks of data loss and breaches
- Support compliance with privacy and security regulations
- Improve trust and transparency in digital ecosystems
- Enable secure, cross-organizational data collaboration
Review the Standard
Stakeholders are invited to review the standard and submit feedback during the 90-day public review period, which will remain open until January 20, 2026.
