Ottawa, ON — The Digital Governance Standards Institute (DGSI) is pleased to announce the release of CAN/DGSI 112 National Occupational Standard for the Cybersecurity Workforce, the first revision of the National Standard of Canada.

CAN/DGSI 112 was first published in 2023, reaffirmed in 2024, and has now been revised in 2026 to provide additional clarity on cybersecurity roles and responsibilities. The revised Standard is published as Edition 1.1.

CAN/DGSI 112 specifies minimum core requirements for the qualification of entry-level cybersecurity professionals, including roles focused on information technology security, information security involving digital artifacts, and digital security. It applies broadly across sectors and industries, including publicly traded and privately held companies, governments and public bodies, and not-for-profit organizations.

The revision follows DGSI’s periodic maintenance process and reflects input from DGSI Technical Committee 3 on digital skills, which is comprised of more than 150 thought leaders and experts in cybersecurity, human resources, and related fields. The revised Standard was approved by a Technical Committee formed balloting group representing producers, government/regulators/policymakers, users, and general interests.

Key Updates of CAN/DGSI 112:2026:

• Updated publication status and designation: the Standard official designation is now CAN/DGSI 112:2023 / Rev 1:2026, Edition 1.1, revised 2026-05, replacing the previous reaffirmed designation CAN/DGSI 112:2023 (R2024).
• Revision history clarified: the introduction now states that the Standard was first published in 2023, reaffirmed in 2024, and revised in 2026, and that the revised version incorporates additional clarity on cybersecurity roles and responsibilities.
• Technical Committee participation updated: the revised Standard reflects participation from more than 150 thought leaders and experts, compared with more than 65 in the reaffirmed 2024 version. The balloting group composition has also been updated.
• Periodic review timing updated: the revised Standard states that technical committee review will begin no later than two years from the date of publication; the reaffirmed 2024 version stated no later than one year from publication.
• Cybersecurity-adjacent roles clarified: the revised version updates language around adjacent roles and explicitly references data-related functions, including data analysts and data scientists, in the discussion of occupational groups supporting cybersecurity outcomes. It also adds Chief Data Officer to the sample table of cybersecurity-adjacent roles.

The revised Standard continues to support cybersecurity practitioners, employers, educators, and workforce development stakeholders by providing competency-based occupational guidance for cybersecurity roles across Canada. It remains platform- and vendor-agnostic and is not intended to be used for conformity assessment.
