OTTAWA, June 16, 2022 – The CIO Strategy Council invites stakeholders to provide input on a draft national standard, CAN/CIOSC 100-9, Data Governance – Part 9: Zero Copy Integration. The draft is available for public review until August 16, 2022.
Current copy-based approach to data integration represents a growing “innovation tax” on Canadian organizations and a barrier to the productive collaboration on data. You are invited to comment on the proposed National Standard of Canada that will help outline a framework for developing new digital solutions where people and systems collaborate on organizational data that is managed within a copyless environment.
The draft “CAN/CIOSC 100-9:20XX (D3), Data governance – Part 9: Zero Copy Integration” is available the CIO Strategy Council website here. The deadline for comments is August 16, 2022. After the public review period closes, Technical Committee 1: Data Governance, will review and disposition all comments received.
What’s in the Draft Standard
Zero-Copy Integration offers a framework for building modular capabilities within a controlled data management environment which can be applied either as stand-alone experiences or combined into advanced digital solutions. Zero-Copy Integration is designed for an audience of IT professionals facing complex data integration challenges and is intended to accelerate digital transformation projects within Canadian organizations.
The Draft aims to establish universal access controls, improve efficiency and reduce duplication to enable data integration that will lead to better collaboration across applications. It avoids solution-specific databases while adopting a data management architecture that enables the modernization of legacy applications as well as enabling data protection and standardizing other important characteristics of data.
Chris McLellan, Director of Operations at the Data Collaboration Alliance, said:
“Zero-Copy Integration represents a foundational—and welcome—shift in digital solution design that signals the beginning of the end for the database silo. In IT environments where generating unrestricted copies of sensitive data between apps hosted around the globe is considered routine, this framework offers a major course correction. It simultaneously reduces the risks associated with data compliance and the mounting costs of data integration while greatly enhancing data-centric innovation. Early adoption of this standard by Canadian organizations will offer a significant competitive edge and its widespread adoption will mark a milestone in the digital era.”
Keith Jansa, Executive Director of the CIO Strategy Council, said:
“Standards help establish accepted practices – and no less is true for new and emerging technologies and approaches for governing data. I encourage everyone to join the conversation, provide input and help shape the next generation of standards.”
