Public Review Opens for CAN/DGSI 120: Use of Biometrics for Authentication

Ottawa, ON — The Digital Governance Standards Institute (DGSI) announces the launch of a public review period for CAN/DGSI 120: Use of Biometrics for Authentication, a National Standard of Canada that establishes minimum requirements for the responsible use of biometric technologies for authentication purposes.

The public review will begin on January 7 and conclude on March 9, providing stakeholders with the opportunity to review the Standard and submit comments, suggestions, and recommendations.

CAN/DGSI 120 addresses the growing use of biometric technologies across digital and physical environments and provides governance-focused guidance on proportionality, transparency, privacy, security, consent, and accountability. The Standard is technology-agnostic and is intended to support organizations in implementing biometric authentication in a manner that is lawful, ethical, and aligned with public trust expectations.

DGSI encourages participation from a broad range of stakeholders, including government and regulators, industry, technology providers, privacy professionals, civil society, and members of the public. Feedback received during the public review will help ensure the Standard remains practical, effective, and responsive to evolving risks, societal expectations, and real-world use cases.

Stakeholders are invited to review CAN/DGSI 120 and submit their feedback via CAN/DGSI 120: Use of Biometrics for Authentication
