Ottawa, ON — The Digital Governance Standards Institute (DGSI) is pleased to announce the reaffirmation of CAN/DGSI 123: Design, Implementation and Evaluation of Regulatory Sandboxes, a National Standard of Canada. Following a periodic maintenance review, the Standard has been reaffirmed for an additional two-year cycle.

CAN/DGSI 123 provides guidance to regulators on determining when regulatory sandboxes are appropriate policy tools and on the design, implementation, and evaluation of regulatory sandboxes. The Standard establishes a structured lifecycle approach that supports regulatory experimentation while maintaining transparency, public protection, and effective regulatory oversight.

Regulatory sandboxes have become increasingly important mechanisms for helping regulators assess emerging technologies, novel business models, and innovative products before they enter regulated markets. By providing a consistent framework for sandbox design and operation, CAN/DGSI 123 supports evidence-based policymaking and informed regulatory modernization across sectors.

The reaffirmation follows a review by DGSI Technical Committee 16 on Regulatory Sandboxes and confirms that the Standard continues to reflect current best practices and remains fit for purpose without requiring substantive revisions at this time. The DGSI extends its sincere appreciation to the members of Technical Committee 16 and all stakeholders who participated in the maintenance review and contributed their expertise to ensuring the continued relevance of this National Standard of Canada.
