Canada’s agricultural sector depends on strong supply chains, and the ability to trace products from field to processor is essential for ensuring quality, safety, and transparency. That is where DGSI/TS 114 comes in.
Originally published in 2021 and reaffirmed in 2024, DGSI/TS 114: Technical Specification for Agricultural Blockchain – Traceability of Canola Through the Canadian Supply Chain outlines minimum requirements for traceability using distributed ledger technologies like blockchain. From growers and grain handlers to processors and distributors, the specification supports organizations involved in the canola supply chain in implementing interoperable, secure, and scalable systems to manage traceability data.
With roughly 43,000 Canadian farmers growing more than 20 million tonnes of canola annually, the need for trustworthy digital systems to track and protect this globally traded crop has never been more important.
As part of Digital Governance Standards Institute’s regular maintenance process, DGSI/TS 114 will be undergoing a 90-day public review beginning July 29 2025 and ending October 28 2025. This is an opportunity for stakeholders to share input on whether the technical specification continues to meet the needs of the industry or if updates are required based on new technologies, regulatory shifts, or evolving best practices.
Key areas addressed in the standard include
- Governance models for data access, privacy, and usage agreements
- Digital data requirements, including semantic and interoperability standards
- Technical components for blockchain integration such as smart contracts and data pipelines
- Traceability obligations across the full supply chain from grower to secondary processor
- Auditing, certification, and record-keeping requirements
- Guidance on logistics, lot tracking, and quality assurance measures
